Welcome to English 201 Introduction to Literature Class Wiki!
This is Prof. Everson's class wiki for English 201 at UMET Bayamon which meets Tuesday and Thursday 10:30-12:00 in CUB 405. The course offers an introduction to literary fiction and literary analysis through the study of literary genres. This course emphasizes the two major literary forms: short story and the novel. Through a selection of readings, students will be familiarized with formal elements of fiction and the basic tools for analysis of texts. Some of the genres and subgenres to be studied include traditional stories expressed as fable, myth, fairy tale, the modern short story, the novella, and the novel, and a variety of its subgenres (historical fiction, realistic fiction, fantasy, mystery, science fiction) and contexts (historical, cultural, social, political, and economic). Contemporary emerging forms such as the graphic novel, micro fiction, fan fiction, and others will also be explored and related to traditional genres and formats (textual and audio-visual). This semester we will continue developing the Folk Literature of Puerto Rico wiki. Wiki Project Workshop - class will meet in Computer Lab 302
Project 1: Research and Write about Folk Literature of Puerto Rico on wiki In this workshop students will:
1. Read the Project assignment sheet -- on Project Assignments page 2. Join Folk Literature of Puerto Rico wiki by "Requesting Membership" 3. Browse Leyendas puertorriquenas by Coll y Toste (digital book) -see Indice on page 203, for a list of stories. 4. Select a story to investigate (except Guanina) and Form a small group of 2-3 or 4 students 5. Make a New Page on the Folk Literature wiki: Name of Page = Title of story - Tag = "coll y toste story" (unless you select a different story to be approved by professor - put "folk stories" as the tag. SAVE the page. Check that the page is on the correct menu. 6. Copy and paste the "Outline Coll y Toste Story page" into your page and save. 7. Divide the sections for the story page equally among the group members. 8. Begin to gather information about the story and editing the group page: publishing information setting, rhetorical analysis, plot analysis, historical context analysis, literary analysis. All information should be based on reliable, academic sources, and properly cited in MLA style, with a full reference at bottom of page.
